... e le cose sono completamente cambiate. Quindi potrebbe apparire strano oggi tornare a discutere di software utilizzabile da server, declassando il nostri laptop ultra-potenti con schede grafiche mega-veloci, a meri terminali un po' più colorati dei loro predecessori. Eppure pare che il futuro sia proprio in questa direzione. Un esempio: negli Autodesk Labs stanno mettendo a punto un po' di applicativi SaaS (Software as a Service), basta provare Project Draw (un embrionale cad vettoriale 2d), Freewheel (un viewer 2D/3D), oppure Project Showroom (un esempio di motore di render realistico e web-based).

Ma forse così strano non è: milioni di computer nel mondo come server a pagamento per noleggiare secondi di grossa potenza di calcolo, niente più software pirata in giro per le macchine private, scalabilità delle risorse a seconda del numero effettivo dei fruitori, protezione di proprietà intellettuale più agevole.... In Autodesk sono ovviamente entusiasti: "SaaS is here to stay, and it is only a matter of time until it takes off and rocks the software industry the way the PC rocked the main frame world. It seems that this is a push to transfer the processing power back to the server rooms where it came from. We are back full circle!"...
